The journey of a Multimedia Integration student.
Apply to college.
It was the end of high school. I had to choose a field of study, but I wasn't sure which one interested me. After consulting with the guidance counselor, she gave me a test to help me get to know myself better. The test revealed that I was creative, curious, and passionate about technology. So, with these results, here are the choices available to me :
Choice 1 : Multimedia Integration.
Choice 2 : History and Archeology.
Multimedia Integration.
I chose the Multimedia Integration program because it allowed me to put my creativity forward, and explore different digital fields. Also, I would have a lot of jobs opportunity because the digital industry is very divers, for example I can work as a programmer or video editor for movies' studios. However, I had to choose the best College that offers this program. By searching on the SRAM website I had created a list of the best College for this program. I have to choose between :
Choice 1 : Bois-de-Boulogne College.
Choice 2 : Edouard Montpetit College.
History and Archeology.
I chose the History and Archeology program because I'm very passionate about history, and I also liked learning more about different cultures, such as their customs and how their social systems worked. By consulting the SRAM website, I made a list of the best colleges for this program. Here are the choices available to me :
Choice 1 : Rosemont College.
Choice 2 : Levis College.
Bois-de-Boulogne College.
I have been accepted at Bois-de-Boulogne College as a student in Multimedia. I was lucky because this College as the best Multimedia programs. I have access to the latest generation of computers with the best software used in the video game and film industry. Also, I have a wide variety of teachers who have worked in the multimedia field. My classmates are very sociable, and I quickly made friends. During a 3D modeling class, my teacher was new and didn't really know how to teach, which caused us to fall significantly behind during the semester. My friends and I studied and worked together in the evening to catch up. However, in that same class, I noticed that a girl had feelings for me. She invited me to go to the movies on a Friday night, and I accepted. After a few weeks, I also began to develop feelings for her. However, I had to stay focused on my studies to avoid falling further behind in that class. Now I have to choose between listening to my feelings or staying focused on my studies.
Choice 1 : Get into a relationship.
Choice 2 : Focus on my studies.
Edouard Montpetit College.
I was accepted to the Edouard Montpetit College and I quickly made friends because the students were very sociable. During my studies in this program I discovered two interests. One for programming because I loved creating the architecture of games, but also implementing concepts and mechanics in the game. However, I also have an attraction to web development because during my studies I had created some interactive websites for fictional video games companies. For my last session I had to choose a study specialty, so I had to choose between programming or web development.
Choice 1 : Programming.
Choice 2 : Web development.
Focus on my studies.
I had chosen to focus on my studies because being in a relationship would be very distracting. During my studies, I had learned to program with the Unity game engine using C++ language and modeled 3D characters on Z Brush software. I had quickly developed an interest in these two fields. I love creating the game architecture by coding all the elements of the game like the principle of gravity and damage mechanics, but I also liked to put my creative side forward. So, I had a choice to make between specializing in programming or 3D modeling.
Choice 1 : Programming.
Choice 2 : 3D modeling.
Rosemont College.
During my studies, I was learning the basics of archeology, including different dating techniques like carbon-14 and stratigraphy. I also studied excavation methods such as grid digging and trenching, which help uncover artifacts without damaging them. We explored the major historical periods and how early civilizations lived, farmed, built homes, and developed writing systems. Two topics truly captured my interest: the Jurassic period and the Middle Ages. I was fascinated by the prehistoric creatures of the Jurassic and the castles, knights, and daily life of the medieval world. In my final semester, I had to choose a specialty, and I hesitated between the Jurassic and the Middle Ages.
Choice 1 : I choose the Jurassic period.
Choice 2 : I chose the Middle Ages period.
Levis College.
I chose to study History and Archeology at Levis College. Unfortunately, the students were not very sociable, which made it difficult to make friends. The professors didn’t seem passionate about their subjects, and that made learning even harder. However, I really enjoyed the history course on the Viking period. It fascinated me because it was full of war, legendary figures, and Norse mythology, which I found incredibly interesting. Despite that, the overall atmosphere at the college didn’t suit me. Recently, I received a job offer to become a mechanic. I’ve always loved cars and wanted to learn more about them. I had to choose between specializing in the Viking period or leaving the program and accepting the job offer.
Choice 1 : I chose to become a mechanic.
Choice 2 : Study the Viking period.
Get into a relationship.
I decided to get into a relationship with her. I'm happy to be with her because we have a lot in common, and she teaches me a lot about the world of cinema because she loves this field of study. However, my grades had been dropping because I was spending too much time with her instead of studying. My teacher told me that if I continued like this I would fail my class. Realizing this, I wondered whether I should break up with my girlfriend or should I sacrifice all off my frees' times to catch up on my studies?
Choice 1 : Break up with her.
Choice 2 : Catch up on my studies.
Break up with her.
After realizing my potential academic failure, I decided to break up with her to save my semester. I invited her to eat at a restaurant after my class and explained my academic situation and my desire to break up. She understood my decision and left the restaurant. However, this decision proved fatal for me, as I fell into a deep depression and was unable to catch up on my academic progress. Faced with this situation, I had two choices: either I could redo my session or change my program of study.
Choice 1 : Redo my session.
Choice 2 : Choose another field of study.
Catch up on my studies.
I had decided to stay in a relationship, but I had to sacrifice all of my weekends to study. Luckily, I had managed to catch up on all the work and during the summer I had a great time with my girlfriend. However, she decided to change programs because she preferred to study cinema. In the end, we broke up because she had to go to a college far from Montreal. But, despite this, I had stayed focused on my studies and I really enjoyed making my own 3D models and animations for my video game characters. However, for my last semester in Multimedia I needed to choose a specific field of study, so I decided to choose between 3D modeling or 3D animation.
Choice 1 : 3D modeling.
Choice 2 : 3D animation.
Redo my session.
I had chosen to repeat my semester which would extend my studies by a year, but it was a sacrifice that was worth it because I want to work in the digital field. After catching up, I had developed an interest in programming and 3D animation, but I had to choose only one field of study for the last of my study program. I had to choose between programming or 3D animation.
Choice 1 : Programming.
Choice 2 : 3D animation.
Choose another field of study.
After searching for some time, I discovered a passion for music. I bought a guitar and enrolled in a music program. After completing this study program, I created my own band, which became a huge success. I decided to travel around Europe to play concerts and became a legend of Rock.
Choice 1 : End
3D modeling.
I had chosen to specialize in 3D modeling, and for my final project, I decided to create a 3D alien model. I used Z Brush software to sculpt the alien, which contains 20,000 vertices and faces, making it more detailed, thus realistic and ideal for use in a film. To make it more interesting, I retopologized the alien, which allowed me to create a low-poly 3D model of the alien to integrate into video games. Once finished, I added it to my portfolio, and a few days later, two companies contacted me. One specialized in video games, called Ubisoft, and the other was the very famous Lucasfilm. I now had to choose between these two legendary companies.
Choice 1 : Ubisoft.
Choice 2 : Lucasfilm.
3D animation.
I had chosen to specialize in 3D animation and for my final project, I had decided to make combat animations using characters from fighting video games. First, I had rigged the characters to create a new skeleton for them to animate each section of their body. I made sure to set the animation speed to 60 fps so that it was smooth for the player. To make the combat animations I had used the motion capture room which gives a more realistic effect. Also, I had made a cinematic for my project which had greatly improved the gaming experience because it was also filmed in motion capture. The final editing was done on the Cinema 4D software. Once the final project was finished I had published it on my portfolio and to my surprise two companies were interested in meeting me. The first was called Dynamik 3D, and they were interested in hiring me as a 3D animator. The second was called Pixar, and he wanted to take me on as an intern to start. I had to choose between Dynamik 3D and Pixar.
Choice 1 : Apply to work at Dynamik 3D.
Choice 2 : Internship at Pixar Studio.
Ubisoft.
I had chosen to go work for Ubisofts to create video games. They gave me the chance to work on their latest game in Assassin's Creed franchise. After working for 5 years on the game, it was finally released, and it was a success. Then, my project manager gave me a promotion to become a project manager. I accepted, and continued to work for Ubisoft for over 30 years, which allowed me to travel and earn a good living.
Choice 1 : End
Lucasfilm.
I chose to work for Lucasfilm, which required me to travel to Orlando the United States, as the studio was located there. They hired me to create new aliens and character designs for their new Star Wars Legacy series. After working there for five years, they appreciated my hard work, so they gave me a promotion to become project manager, which was a great honor. I continued working for them for 20 years, which allowed me to put my creativity forward and flourish.
Choice 1 : End
Apply to work at Dynamik 3D.
I had chosen to apply to Dynamik 3D as a 3D animator. The manager introduced me to my new work team and explained the studio's rules and office policies. Then, I settled into my office and attended my first team meeting to brainstorm on the studio's new structure. In the end, I was in charge of doing the fight animations since that was my specialty. I used their small motion capture studio to record the animations and imported them into my 3D animation and 3D modeling software. After two years of work, our game was finally released, and it was a big success. Following that, I was promoted to 3D animator grade 2, which allowed me to manage a small team and have a premium wage. I continued to work for them for 20 years because I felt good in this company, and they allowed me to accomplish my projects and put my passion forward.
Choice 1 : End
Internship at Pixar Studio.
I had chosen to apply to Pixar Studio as an intern in the 3D animation department. The internship manager was very kind, and he taught me tips to simplify the rigging process. With my hard work I managed to gain the trust of my manager, and he gave me the opportunity to work on the new animated film called Elio. I had animated some action scenes and that was much more to the team. After my internship my manager offered me a vacant position as a 3D animator. I accepted and continued to practice my passion as a 3D animator at Pixar for 20 years which gave me a feeling of fulfillment.
Choice 1 : End
Programming.
I had chosen to do my final year project by specializing in video game programming. For this project, I had programmed a behavior tree to make intelligent enemies and was able to take players by surprise. I had programmed my behavior tree with the C++ language on the Unity game engine. Also, I had created a table that collects the player's data so that the enemy AI could be more efficient on the battlefield. The project was a success, and I had added it to my portfolio. Following my graduation, I received a request from Microsoft Game Studio offering me the position of junior programmer, but I also had the possibility of continuing my studies at the university. I had to choose between accepting the job offer or continuing at the university.
Choice 1 : Accept the job offer at Microsoft Game Studio.
Choice 2 : Go to NAD University.
Accept the job offer at Microsoft Game Studio.
I had chosen the job offer and went to the studio for my interview. After consulting my portfolio they hired me as a junior programmer for their latest game called Halo Infinite. He had asked me to program the enemies to be intelligent and offer a challenge to the player. During a team meeting I proposed to make a behavior tree which would allow the enemies to collect data from the players and juggle between different behaviors to confront the player like going from the patrol state to the search phase when the enemy hears a noise coming from the player. They liked it a lot, so I created a behavior tree for the enemies, and I did some overtime to fix some bugs. After 2 years of development the game was released, and it was a marketing success 1 million copies sold. This resulted in my promotion to Senior Programmer and I continued to work for them for 20 years, eventually retiring once I felt a sense of fulfillment.
Choice 1 : End
Go to NAD University.
I had chosen to go to NAD University to deepen my knowledge in video game design. I had courses in programming, modeling and 3D animation. I had decided to do a bachelor's degree in level design because it brought together all the courses mentioned above. After 3 years of study I had passed my baccalaureate and I had a lot of content to publish in my portfolio. I had decided to apply to two video game companies that I found interesting. I had to choose between Bethesda Studio or Ubisoft.
Choice 1 : Choose Bethesda Studio.
Choice 2 : Ubisoft.
Choose Bethesda Studio.
I chose to apply to Bethesda Studio because I was a big fan of the Elder Scrolls series. During the interview, the interviewer was very interested in my programming skills, so he gave me the junior programmer position. It was perfect for me because it allowed me to learn the ropes in this field, and in a few months of development, I innovated a behavior tree system that allowed enemy to dynamically transition from passive to active by collecting player data. This revolutionized the gameplay of the game, and when the game was released, it was a huge success. As a result, I received a salary increase. I continued working for them for 15 years and then retired when I felt a sense of fulfillment.
Choice 1 : End
Web development.
I chose web development because programming in HTML is much simpler than programming in C++, but also creating interactive web pages to promote video games was very interesting. Also, by choosing this specialization I learned to apply styles using the CSS language that can be associated in the header of the HTML web page. Also, to make a web page more interactive I learned to use the Java Script language that can be associated in the same way as CSS. With this acquired knowledge I decided to make my own website selling video games for my final project. Thus, video game students could publish their games on my website to be sold. My project was a success I passed 97%. Upon graduation, I received an internship offer to be a web developer for the Journal of Montreal. This was very good news, but I also wanted to found my own company and be my own boss. I had to choose between accepting the internship or creating my own company.
Choice 1 : Accept the internship at the Journal of Montreal.
Choice 2 : Start my own web development company.
Accept the internship at the Journal of Montreal.
After graduating in web development, I received an internship offer from the Journal de Montreal, which I accepted right away. During my internship, I learned the ropes through on-the-job training and quickly became confident in my skills. This experience had given me a foot in the door, and I was soon offered a vacant position as a full-time web developer. Over the years, I worked on major projects like redesigning the newspaper’s online platform to make it more dynamic and accessible for both younger and older readers. I made a new phone app for the Journal of Montreal, and it was a success we gain a lot of new subscribers. My creativity and problem-solving skills became valuable assets to the team. I often worked overtime to meet deadlines, but the sense of fulfillment I felt when seeing the final results made it all worth it. My knowledge of design trends and user experience really came in handy as we adapted to digital media. After twenty years of hard work and dedication, I finally retired grateful and proud of my journey.
Choice 1 : End
Start my own web development company.
After graduating from Collège Édouard-Montpetit, I wanted to start my own web development company. To make it happen, I gathered a team of close friends from my program and decided to contact a few companies at random to offer our services. Surprisingly, a small video game company responded and accepted. They explained that they wanted a website to promote their games and allow customers to buy them online. With those requirements, we developed a dynamic website that showcased their products beautifully and made the user experience smooth. Once the site was completed and launched, we began receiving multiple requests from other game companies that also wanted to redesign their websites. I decided to name my company Beauvais Web Development. After 30 years of hard work, my company became the top web development firm in the industry. I became wealthy, traveled the world, and eventually hired a CEO to take over, as I had finally retired.
Choice 1 : End
I choose the Jurassic period.
I had chosen to specialize in the Jurassic period for my final semester. I studied the different stages of the Jurassic and the various dinosaurs that lived on different continents, such as Stegosaurus in North America, Brachiosaurus in Africa, and Allosaurus in Europe. However, it was exhausting to memorize all the dates, and I did some research. I discovered that the academic path to becoming an archeologist was long and expensive. I also learned that out of ten archeology PhD graduates, only three live comfortably, while the others end up teaching high school or working in dusty museums. I love museums and archeology, but this made me doubt my future. At the end of the semester, I received an internship offer at a prehistory museum. I had to choose between accepting the internship or choose another field of study.
Choice 1 : I chose the internship at the museum.
Choice 2 : Choose another field of study.
I chose the Middle Ages period.
I had chosen to specialize in the Middle Ages because it was a period rich in history and full of misconceptions. I was especially fascinated by the Byzantines, as they were the last Romans. Their culture was incredibly rich, blending Greek and Roman influences. Ancient texts described them as the most magnificent empire of the medieval era, and they were great inventors, even creating early prototypes of flamethrowers. Their capital, Constantinople, was stunning and considered the center of the world. My passion for this empire led me to pursue studies in that era. I was thinking of applying to UQAM, but I heard the field was costly and risky, with many students dropping out. I had to choose between going to university or changing my field of study.
Choice 1 : I go to UQAM University.
Choice 2 : Choose another field of study.
I chose the internship at the museum.
I had accepted the internship offer at the prehistory museum. My manager gave me a tour of the museum, and I found it truly fascinating. He then gave me my tasks: sorting archives and assisting an archeologist who was assembling a dinosaur skeleton. I learned so much during my internship that it made me want to build a career there. After it ended, I applied for a job alongside the archeologists. It allowed me to follow my passion without studying for ten years. I was hired and worked at the museum for 40 years. Over time, I traveled to dig sites and eventually became the museum’s director.
Choice 1 : End
I go to UQAM University.
I had chosen to study in the History program at UQAM, and I absolutely loved it. It allowed me to read many ancient books and manuscripts from different periods, and I even had the chance to travel with my class to several countries in Europe to learn more about their histories. I decided to pursue a PhD in History after I managed to get a job at a museum, which helped me finance my studies. I also chose to follow my passion all the way, and after ten years of study, I finally received my doctorate. Then, I decided to become a professor of History and Archeology at UQAM, sharing my knowledge and experiences with new generations of students.
Choice 1 : End
I chose to become a mechanic.
I chose to accept the job offer and leave the bad atmosphere of the college. When I arrived at the garage, my boss taught me how to do oil changes and inspect vehicles. For a week, I was supervised, and I was learning a lot. After I proved myself, my boss let me serve customers and repair their cars on my own. I also did other daily tasks that mechanics usually handle. It was a peaceful life, and I really loved it. That’s why I had decided to stay and work in that garage for the rest of my life. Choosing to become a mechanic turned out to be the best decision I had ever made. I finally felt happy and fulfilled.
Choice 1 : End
Study the Viking period.
I had decided to specialize in the Viking period because it was a fascinating era filled with war and technological advances, especially in maritime navigation. I was also deeply interested in Norse mythology because of its gods and legends. The Vikings were an impressive people with strong knowledge in trade and agriculture, which made them even more interesting to study. However, the classroom atmosphere didn’t improve, and it became harder to stay motivated. I started to hesitate. I didn’t know if I should quit the program to work at the garage. But I heard that UQAM University had a nice atmosphere and was the perfect place to study history. I had to choose between finishing my final semester and applying to university, or accepting the job offer and starting a new path.
Choice 1 : I go to UQAM University.
Choice 2 : I chose to become a mechanic.
